Mental illness does not discriminate. It does not affect people based on their looks, age, gender, or level of education. Mental illness is nicely diplomatic in that sense. It affects people from all walks of life, including the young and old, men and women, the rich and famous, and the educated and employed. If you don’t believe me, check out some of these stats.
This is why we believe it is so important to maintain a healthy work environment for those who are living and working with a mental illness. It can be difficult to understand the needs of a colleague who is returning to work after being diagnosed with a mental illness. We understand how to accommodate the needs of people with physical disability. We can see when someone has broken a leg and needs help getting something off of a shelf. We can hear when someone has lost their voice from a bad cold and needs help getting through their presentation. But we do not always know when someone is suffering from a mental illness and how this affects their professional life.
Every work environment can benefit from a mental health program; this is why we offer our Workplace Mental Health Check-Up. We help business leaders and Human Resource professionals better understand how mental illness affects their workplace and how they can create a healthy work environment through recognizing and addressing mental illness issues, accessing support services, managing disability leave and return to work programs, and providing workplace accommodations.
